Immune Booster!

Our body has an amazing ability to fight off diseases and recover even in the face of impossible odds.  In order for it to do that, it needs our help.  The way we respond to sickness, stress and challenges in life can either aid in or defeat these abilities.  I can not say that doing all the “right” things will exempt you from Covid-19 or any other sickness, but I can say that the more you do to support your body, the greater chance you have at staying healthy and, should you get sick, the greater chance you have for recovery.

While it is important to practice frequent hand washing and social distancing, there are other very important and powerful measures you should be taking to protect yourself and your family. The first step is to build your immune system.  Your immune system is made up of several organs and cell types and designed to work in perfect synchrony (most of the time) throughout the body to fight off pathogens and clear up dead cells.  In essence, it's here to keep us healthy. There is much we can do to ensure our immune system is at its peak functioning so that it can be successful at its job.

Today I’m going to give you a power packed recipe that will not only keep your immune system strong, but also fight inflammation and improve brain functioning.  This is a ginger turmeric paste that I’ve used to keep me healthy ever since losing my spleen (which puts me in the category of being immunocompromised).  I’ve used this recipe when I’ve been around others who are sick and remained healthy.  On those rare occasions I’ve run myself ragged and actually started getting sick, I’ve used this and been able to overcome quickly.  I’ve also shared this recipe with many a friend and colleague, as well as those I’ve worked with in Cuba and Jamaica, and have seen many people get well as a result.

This recipe requires only a few humble, yet potent ingredients- ginger, turmeric, black peppercorns, and raw honey. Ginger and turmeric are power packed roots.  They are high in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, are very beneficial for your brain health and have additional properties that combat infections and improve immune system functioning.  Black pepper is added to the recipe to increase the body’s absorption of the beneficial properties in the turmeric.  I call it the key to unlocking turmeric’s vigor.  Raw honey is a great healer as it has anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties that help in the mending process. Following the below recipe will not only strengthen your immune system but also give any bacteria or virus that “one two” punch that it needs to be eliminated from your system.

  • Approximately 1 inch fresh ginger root

  • Approximately 1 inch fresh turmeric root

  • 1/8 tsp fresh ground black pepper

  • 1 tsp raw honey (note that it should be raw honey - processed honey does not have the same medicinal benefits as raw honey)

(You can also substitute or add garlic into the recipe and if you want a real boost, add some cayenne pepper.  All of these ingredients are packed with antioxidants and other immune boosting properties and overdosing is virtually impossible.)

To Prepare:

  • Using the edge is a spoon, scrape the skin of the turmeric and ginger to remove it

  • Grate or chop finely the turmeric and ginger into a bowl (you can use a grater, knife or food processor)

  • Add honey to the ginger/turmeric mix

  • Grind some fresh black pepper (approx 1/8 tsp).

  • Mix all ingredients and then enjoy

Usage and other tips

For prevention of colds and general health, you can take weekly or daily.  If you feel you are coming down with a cold or flu, use 2-3 times per day for 3-5 days.  Take care and consult a doctor if your symptoms do not go away or get worse within a few days.

Should you want to make larger batches don’t feel hung up on amounts. Try to use equal amounts of the ginger and turmeric, but if you’re deficient in one, it’s ok.  The only caution I would make is to use just enough honey so that all the ingredients mix together but they are not swimming in honey.  Remember, honey is still a form of sugar so too much honey (as with sugar) can actually start to suppress your immune functioning. Do not substitute other forms of sweetness (i.e. sugar or maple syrup) for the honey as no other substitute has quite the same benefits of raw honey.  Store in refrigerator for up to one week - you can store longer but the longer these grated herbs sit, their healing properties begin to diminish.
